Hitting Our Targets

Introduction of archery to our disabled sports team

Following in the foot-steps of the previous cohort we wanted to continue to introduce new disablity sports to the handibasket team to broaden their experience, to offer them new skills and to faciliate their social integration. The idea being that the more disabled sports there are, the more they are able to demonstrate how capable they are. One of our UK volunteers, Kayleigh, a healthcare assistant in the UK had done wheelchair archery at her workplace, and therefore had the idea of introducing it to our Handibasket team in Koudougou as a new inclusive sport. With national competitions held in Bobo-Dioulasso every two years,  we could imagine Archery offering further opportunities and development for its best players.

With archery not being a well established sport in Koudougou, and our limited budget, buying the equipment was not an option. This left us with the daunting task of somehow making it ourselves.
For the bows and arrows, one of the team members went off to an 'artisan', and a few weeks later some very rustic medieval-looking bows and arrows appeared at the ASK office. Think less Rio Paralympics and more tribal hunting, with the wooden bows bound together using animal hide. At a first glance we were skeptical they would actually work, but this was soon dispelled after some practice.

The next task was to make the target, with just the wooden board provided by our bow and arrow man. It may not seem difficult to draw some circles on a board, but without any tools, even this turns into a challenge. Ethan and Odette who had taken on the task had to be very resourceful! They ended up using items they found round the office, such as a broken curtain pole and a length of rope as a compass, with a surprisingly successful result.

Once the equipment was made and tested, it was time to put it to use! After the usual Handibasket training, we brought the equipment out and had Odette expertly explain the rules, whilst Ethan demonstrated the correct technique, with moderate success in hitting the board.

Then it was down to the team to show us their skills! Some took to the sport very naturally whilst others struggled with the technique as there were no assists like UK bows to help stabilise and secure the arrow. Taking the lead on the scoreboard was the Handibasket captain, Daouda, with a strong 60 points after 3 rounds. On the other end of the scale, was Pauline, coming away with a less impressive 6 points after 3 rounds. The response from the team was very positive, with everyone seeming to really enjoy the comeptition. What's more, most of our homemade arrows survived the session despite sometimes bending on impact after a few loose shots hit the wall. The competitive spirit of the session saw the team in high hopes of taking part in the activity again, ensuring that this would not just be a one-off sport but a more sustainable activity that could be developed for those with less of a passion for handibasket.
